Pathways to Success: A STEM Scholarship Program to Support Community College Students in Rural Communities

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) Program supports academically talented students with demonstrated financial need who are pursuing degrees in STEM fields. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the S-STEM program provides scholarship support while also strengthening institutional systems that promote student retention, completion, and successful transfer or entry into the STEM workforce.
Through S-STEM, institutions award multi-year scholarships to eligible students and implement evidence-based strategies such as mentoring, cohort models, career development activities, research and internship opportunities, and enhanced academic support services. The program is designed not only to reduce financial barriers but also to build structured pathways that increase graduation rates and support students’ transition to four-year institutions or high-demand STEM careers.
Project Objectives:
- Recruit 65 financially disadvantaged and academically talented students into the MTC S-STEM program
- Increase the fall-to-fall retention rate for S-STEM participants to 70%, the graduation rate to 30%, and the transfer rate to 30%.
- Achieve at least a 90% placement rate in four-year programs or entry into the workforce in STEM fields for participants completing the MTC S-STEM program.
- Provide S-STEM scholars with social, professional development, and outreach events through MTC and through the national S-STEM scholar network
- Provide an opportunity for students to attend the annual S-STEM Scholar meeting
- Provide faculty mentoring from a full-time or adjunct faculty member based on students’ career goals
- Provide One-on-one academic advising, transfer support, and job placement resources.
