Learning Support and Tutoring FAQs
I feel a little embarrassed about accessing learning support. Is that normal?
Absolutely. Seeking help is a normal and expected part of the learning process. Many students who use tutoring are strong students who simply want to understand their material better or improve their study strategies. Tutors work with students at all levels—from those building foundational skills to those preparing for competitive programs.
What happens during a 1:1 tutoring session?
It depends on what you need. Tutors can help you understand course concepts, review material, and develop strategies for learning. Tutors can guide you through examples and help you answer questions.
The goal is to provide you with the tools you need to complete your work independently.
Tutoring & Learning Support Policies
Learning Support services are designed to help students develop knowledge, skills, and strategies that promote long-term academic success. Tutors support student learning by guiding, coaching, and encouraging independent problem-solving.
Preparing for Your Session
- Bring relevant materials such as assignments, notes, textbooks, course instructions, or specific questions.
- Tutoring is most effective when you arrive prepared to discuss particular topics or challenges.
- If you are unsure what materials to bring, contact your tutor before the appointment.
What Tutors Can Do
- Help you understand course concepts and assignments.
- Review notes, study materials, and course resources.
- Demonstrate problem-solving strategies and learning techniques.
- Help you identify areas for improvement.
- Provide feedback on writing and academic work.
- Support the development of study skills, time management, and learning strategies.
What Tutors Cannot Do
- Complete assignments for you.
- Provide answers to graded coursework.
- Walk through graded assignments step-by-step.
- Replace classroom instruction or reteach entire class sessions.
- Override instructor requirements, grading decisions, or course policies.
If You Missed Class
- Review course materials and notes before meeting with a tutor.
- Check Brightspace for announcements, recordings, and assignments.
- Obtain notes from a classmate when possible.
- Contact your instructor with questions about missed course content.
- Tutors can help clarify specific concepts after you have reviewed available materials.
Scheduling and Attendance
- Tutoring is intended to supplement independent learning and practice. Most students benefit from meeting with a tutor once or twice per week between periods of independent study. Thus, back-to-back or daily tutoring appointments are not available.
- Students seeking more intensive support should contact Learning Support staff to discuss available options.
Canceling an Appointment
- Cancel appointments as early as possible if you cannot attend.
- Appointments may be canceled through the scheduling system, the confirmation email, or by contacting your tutor.
- Cancellations made less than two hours before an appointment may be recorded as a missed appointment.
- Repeated no-shows or last-minute cancellations may result in scheduling restrictions.
Online Tutoring
- Online tutoring is only conducted through official college platforms.
- Students scheduled for online appointments will receive access information through the scheduling system or by email.
- Students are expected to join sessions from an appropriate location that supports learning and minimizes distractions.
Tutoring Locations
- In-person tutoring takes place in visible, public campus locations.
- The primary location for one-on-one tutoring appointments and tutor office hours is Bryson Hall 194.
- Some tutoring sessions may occur in classrooms, the library, or other designated academic spaces.
If Tutoring Is Not Available for Your Course
- Submit a Request a Tutor form.
- Learning Support staff will make reasonable efforts to connect you with available support resources.
- Availability of tutoring depends on tutor expertise and staffing.
Accessibility and Accommodations
- Learning Support services are available to all MTC students.
- Students who require accommodations should contact Disability Services to discuss available support options.
