Testing and Tutoring

Some programs and certifications require specific exams such as the ACT, USA, and other standardized tests. Be sure to check your program’s requirements or talk to your advisor to see which tests may apply to you.

For questions or more information about any of these exams, call the Testing Center 740-389-4636 ext. 1193 or email.

ACT and SAT Testing

Students may submit either ACT or SAT scores for placement or admission in certain MTC limited-enrollment programs. Talk to your advisor before registering for a test.

ACT and SAT scores are interchangeable; it is not necessary or recommended that students take both.  Find out how ACT and SAT scores convert here .

ACT Testing

The ACT is offered multiple times each year, typically in September, October, December, February, April, June, and July.  The exam is about 2 hours for the required sections (English, Math, Reading).  Taking the optional sections will add up to 90 minutes.

  • Registration: Deadlines are usually 4–5 weeks before each test date, with late registration available for an additional fee.
  • Locations: Tests are administered at local high schools and designated testing centers.  You will choose your testing location at registration.
  • Register & Learn More: ACT Official Website.

Please note:

  • If you take the computer-based ACT without the optional Writing or Science sections, your test will be shorter, cost less, and scores will be available sooner. MTC programs do not require these optional sections.
  • Students needing accommodations should contact MTC Disability Services for assistance at least 3 months before the registration deadline, as availability is limited to specific sites and dates.

Preparation Tip: The single best way to prepare is to take a practice test ahead of time.  Free practice tests and other preparation resources are available here.

SAT Testing

The College Board offers the SAT several times per year, typically in August, October, November, December, March, May, and June.  The exam is 2 hours and 14 minutes.

Registration: Deadlines are generally about 1 month before the test date, with late registration options available.

Locations: Tests are held at local high schools and official SAT testing sites. You will choose your testing location at registration.

Register & Learn More: SAT Official Website.

Please note:

  • SAT scores are equivalent to ACT scores for placement purposes.
  • Students needing accommodations should contact MTC Disability Services for assistance at least 3 months before the registration deadline, as availability is limited to specific sites and dates.

Preparation Tip: The single best way to prepare is to take a practice test ahead of time.  Free practice tests are available here.  Other free preparation resources are available here.

USA Testing

The USA is required for admission to MTC’s Sonography program. This exam is designed to measure natural abilities that are important for a career in sonography, such as coordination, spatial awareness, judgment, problem solving, and logical thinking. This is not a test you can study for— just do your best.

Please note:

  • Students must receive approval prior to scheduling. To request approval, please complete this form indicating your intent to test.
