With rising costs, some Marion Technical College students juggling work, classes, and family responsibilities find that getting to class can be a major obstacle.

Marion Technical College would like to thank the United Way of North Central Ohio and its local supporters, who provided grant dollars to furnish gas cards and bus passes for over 150 students over the past two years.

“I’m thankful every time I get one. It definitely helps me to get to and from school. Thank you, Marion!” said Sarina, a student close to finishing her nursing degree. “Without the gas card, it would have been extremely difficult for me.”

Transportation Needed for Internships and More

“I am incredibly grateful for this support and the impact it has had on my ability to continue my studies at Marion Technical College,” said Samantha Pyles. “Balancing school, work, and being a single parent can be challenging, and this assistance has helped relieve a significant financial burden, allowing me to stay focused on my education and clinical training.”

Students use the cards, not just for class, internships, and practicums, but also to meet with tutors and advisors. Some who commute an hour or more appreciate the assistance.

“This made it less stressful on how I would be able to afford to get to class four days a week last semester! I'm very grateful for this great resource we have at MTC!” said another student. “It's an excellent program that helps single moms like me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart - truly!”

“The gas cards are very helpful for me, and I really appreciate them. My family has been struggling financially for quite some time, and it would be much harder for me, if not impossible, to get to class without them. This helps so much,” said Stefan.

“I appreciate receiving this gas card in time of need. I am a full-time student, employed full-time, and a single mother of two,” said another student.

Students Describe a Life-Changing Difference

“This college and program have changed my entire life,” said Ashley. “We are so blessed because of this program, helping me get to school and work here when my car blew up last year. Because of this program, I am still enrolled. I’m forever grateful.”

“It has helped me tremendously during my nursing program when finances have been the biggest struggle,” said Auwinggau.

“I thank Marion Technical College and Marion Area Transit because without this program, there would be a high chance I would struggle to make it to every single class. God bless!” said DuJywan.

Another student mentioned having to pay individuals to get to class until they accessed this program. Sometimes, a high heating bill, a pink slip, or an unexpected car repair can drain a student’s budget dry.

“The gas cards saved me from financial burdens more times than I can count, and allowed me to continue attending class when I was out of a job,” said Hailie.

“The gas cards are greatly appreciated, and I am so thankful for them!” said Logan.
