What is S-STEM?
The S-STEM (Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program offers support for academically promising students with demonstrated financial need who are pursuing degrees in science, mathematics, or technology at Marion Technical College. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the goal of the program is to increase the success of low-income students in STEM disciplines through financial assistance, mentoring, academic resources, and career development opportunities.
In addition to scholarship funding, S-STEM scholars at Marion Tech benefit from a range of support services designed to promote academic achievement and long-term success. These include personalized faculty mentoring, opportunities to engage with a community of STEM peers, and guidance for career planning or transfer to a four-year institution. Program participants will also have access to professional development activities such as workshops, guest speakers, and industry connections, helping them prepare for future STEM careers.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for the S-STEM program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be enrolled in a degree program or concentration in science, mathematics, or technology, with at least part-time enrollment (6 credit hours per semester). Note that engineering and health degrees do not qualify for this scholarship.
- Complete the FAFSA and demonstrate financial need.
- Show academic promise, with a preferred minimum GPA of 2.5 in high school or college.
- Submit a written essay (up to 500 words) explaining how the S-STEM program will support their educational and career goals.
S-STEM Scholarship Awards
All recipients who maintain eligibility will receive:
- Up to $4700 per academic year towards an eligible associate’s degree. Combined awards may not exceed the cost of attendance. Part time students will receive a prorated scholarship.
- Support from academic advisors, program advisors, faculty mentors, career development activities, and much more.
What are the Requirements?
To maintain eligibility, students must:
- Maintain a 2.5 GPA.
- Be enrolled in a science, math, or technology degree or concentration full or part time (at least 6 credit hours per semester).
- Complete the FASFA.
S-STEM Scholars should:
- Regularly meet with their Academic Advisor and Program Advisor to monitor progress towards degree completion, transfer, and employment. Advisors will provide expert academic advising and connect students to campus resources.
- Regularly meet with their Faculty Mentor to gain insights and foster connections into their chosen field or career.
- Participate in social, educational, and professional development activities with the S-STEM cohort. Educational and professional development activities include workshops, guest lectures, site visits aligning specifically with STEM careers. Events will be tailored based on the interests of the S-STEM scholars and their career paths.
S-STEM Essay Requirement
All applicants must submit a 150-500 word essay addressing the question “How will the S-STEM program benefit your educational and career goals?”
In your response, reflect on your academic journey, career aspirations, and/or any challenges you have faced, including how this program will help you reach your goals and enhance your educational experience. Strong essays will be clear, personal, and focused on your individual path to success.
Attention! You must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA). Results must be received by MTC prior to July 15, 2025.
