Advising

New Student Information

Preparing for your Advising Appointment

  1. Make sure that you have set up your MTC Student Account. For more information about setting up your account, click here.
  2. Send your high school and/or college transcripts to MTC prior to meeting with your Academic Advisor so we have this information available during the meeting.
  3. Schedule a new student advising appointment with your Academic Advisor.  This initial meeting must be held in-person or via Zoom. You should allow up to 50 minutes for your first appointment. You can schedule an appointment by calling 740-386-4200 or schedule online.
  4. Some students may need to complete placement testing prior to their appointment. Placement testing can be arranged to be on the same day as your new student appointment or on a day prior to your appointment.

Math:

If you graduated high school and/or have an ACT score within the last 3 years, you may not need to do any placement testing if you are satisfied with your ACT score and grades in math.

  • If you graduated high school more than 3 years ago, we recommend placement testing, but you may also self-place into math courses with built-in review and support.

English:

If you graduated high school and/or have an ACT score within the last 5 years, you may not need to do any placement testing if you are satisfied with your ACT score and grades in English and reading.

  • If you graduated high school more than 5 years ago, you willneed to take placement testing for Writing and Reading unless you have previous college-level English Composition coursework.

Science:

Health majors may also need to take a science placement test if they graduated high school more than 5 years ago unless they have college-level biology, chemistry, anatomy, or related coursework or applicable licensure in a related field within the last five-years. Talk to your Academic Advisor for more details.

Computer Skills:

IT majors may need to take a technology skills assessment unless they have taken a computer course in high school or at another college or have experience using computers applications (email, Windows navigation, file management, etc.) in a work environment.
