Accuplacer testing is required for many MTC academic programs, and it is an essential tool for achieving student success.
Students are encouraged to complete these assessments prior to selecting first term classes. However, the assessments must be completed prior to registration for the first English, math, or computer course.
Students may be exempt from completing assessment if they:
have taken the ACT, or
have earned MTC credit for corresponding brush-up or college level English or math, or
register for the lowest level English, math, or computer course or
register for courses other than English, math, or computers
These evaluations are designed to test students in three academic areas (writing, reading, and numerical skills/PreAlgebra and Algebra) and suggest initial English and/or math courses that are appropriate for the demonstrated academic skill level. In this way, students are not placed in a course that is above their abilities or a ‘‘rehash’’ of skills they have already mastered.
Students are required to successfully complete the recommended brush-up courses, indicated by their assessment score, prior to registering for college-level English, math, or computer courses. Accuplacer testing is free and conducted in the Student Resource Center (Bryson Hall 183).
Arrive a few minutes early to Room 183 (Student Resource Center, Bryson Hall).
Bring your social security number.
No fees are required for Assessment.
Assessments will be scored immediately in the Student Resource Center. Results will be explained during registration by academic advisors.
Allow three (3) hours for Assessment, although most students complete the tests within two hours.
The Basic Skills Assessments are available through the Student Resource Center in Room 183 of the Bryson Hall/Technical Education Center.
The Student Resource Center recommends that you take the Accuplacer and Technology Skills Test at your earliest convenient time.

The Elementary Algebra test, comprised of 12 questions, measures your ability to perform basic algebraic operations and to solve problems involving elementary algebraic concepts. There are three types of Elementary Algebra questions:
Operations with integers and rational numbers: topics include computation with integers and negative rationals, the use of absolute values, and ordering.
Operations with algebraic expressions: topics include the evaluation of simple formulas and expressions, adding and subtracting monomials and polynomials, multiplying and dividing monomials and polynomials, the evaluation of positive rational roots and exponents, simplifying algebraic fractions, and factoring.
Solution of equations, inequalities, word problems: topics include solving linear equations and inequalities, solving quadratic equations by factoring, solving verbal problems presented in an algebraic context, including geometric reasoning and graphing, and the translation of written phrases into algebraic expressions.
The Reading Comprehension test, comprised of 20 questions, measures your ability to understand what you read, to identify main ideas and to make inferences. You need to distinguish between direct statements and secondary or supporting ideas.
