Honor Brandy Winfield on Giving Tuesday

(Marion) Marion Technical College invites the community to honor alumnus and officer Brandy Winfield with a donation. Once the $20,000 goal is raised, the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy classroom will be named in honor of this local hero and provide additional resources for students, which currently include Brandy’s son, Landon.

Winfield followed in the steps of his father, Rick, and his brother, Cory, into law enforcement. Winfield graduated from Tri-Rivers Career Center and Marion Technical College. An instructor remembers Brandy fondly.

“He was a very good student. He took his studies very seriously and also liked to have a good time. He was laughing and joking and had a lot of friends. He was very goal driven,” the instructor remembers.

In October 14, 2004, Winfield was serving as a Marion County deputy sheriff when he was killed in the line of duty. He had stopped to aid a stranded motorist. The 29-year-old was survived by his wife and two children.

“It’s sad that Brandy can’t be here and his dad can’t be here to help him receive this honor. He lost his life protecting other people and serving our county and our country,” the instructor said. “His son is in my class now. Landon. We talk a lot about his dad.”

Cadets
Cadets learn in the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy classroom which will be named for Deputy Brandy Winfield if funds can be raised.

While the circumstances are tragic, this is a worthy way to remember Winfield.

“It’s an excellent way to honor not only one of our graduates but someone who gave his life protecting all of us and upholding the laws. He deserves our respect,” the instructor said.

“We really appreciate all of our community supporters who keep their donations local and support our students,” said Mike Stuckey, Director of the Marion Technical College Foundation. “Even a small donation makes a big impact in the lives of our students and helping them succeed.”
