College Graduate Competencies

The Assessment Steering Committee has identified six areas of College Graduate Competencies, or CGCs. These CGCs are communicated to students by a statement that is common to every course syllabus:

MTC believes that every graduate should possess a common set of skills regardless of the student's major. These skills are collectively called the College Graduate Competencies, or CGCs. The faculty has defined specific CGCs in six areas:

  • Mathematics: Solve problems using mathematics
  • Communications: Communicate and write effectively
  • Information Technology:  Use a computer to perform personal and professional tasks
  • Problem Solving and Decision Making: Recognize and solve problems through analysis, evaluation, and synthesis to make informed decisions.
  • Interpersonal and Professional Behavior: Demonstrate good work habits, effective interpersonal and teamwork skills, and a high level of professionalism.
  • Diversity:  Exhibit respect and sensitivity for individual and institutional differences.

These skills are taught, reinforced, and/or periodically measured in various courses throughout the curriculum in every degree program.
