Phlebotomy and Medical Laboratory Assistant External Certification Information

Two important members of any health care team are the Phlebotomist and the Medical Laboratory Assistant.

Phlebotomists are specially trained individuals who use a variety of equipment and techniques to collect blood samples from patients, usually in conjunction with diagnostic testing. Additionally, phlebotomists have a great deal of critical contact with patients of all types. A skilled phlebotomist can make drawing blood a less traumatic experience by locating veins and introducing a needle or other equipment with little or no discomfort.

Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs) may also function as phlebotomists but are especially trained to assist in the performance of routine laboratory testing.  In addition to blood collection, MLAs process blood samples, perform quality control, run laboratory equipment, and run simple laboratory tests.  MLAs serve a diverse role assisting other laboratory personnel and patients and are an integral member of the health care team who shares knowledge, promotes learning, and collaborates with other professionals in providing effective patient care.

Career Opportunities:

Careers in medical laboratory are predicted to grow by roughly 14 percent through the year 2016.  Many students begin their careers as phlebotomists and medical laboratory assistants to gain experience and earn income as they pursue their degree in medical laboratory technology.
