PSE ... WHAT!?

PSEO KidsPSEO. It stands for Post Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO), which stands for saving money and earning college  credits while still in high school. It’s one of the best kept secrets of Marion Technical College, and it’s about to be exposed!

Did you know that if you are a qualifying high school junior or senior that goes to one of 35 area schools, you have options to receive college credits before you graduate?  On some of these high school campuses, the courses come to you when MTC faculty travel to your school to teach college courses. Sometimes high school students travel to Marion Technical College to get a jump start on college.

The courses that are offered are entry-level college courses that will apply to any public college and any   major in the state of Ohio (see the complete list of courses inside).  That means these credits are completely transferable and will follow you to any college in Ohio. We would love for you to continue the money-saving opportunities of attending Marion Tech once you graduate, but if you do not … the credits go with you.  Can you say, “No Brainer?”

Bucyrus High School
, for example, has 24 students who take classes for college credit through the PSEO program. They extend the invitation to area schools, which has brought eight students from Wynford to the class (the general public can also  attend).  In the past, Colonel Crawford has also participated.

Thirty-five Upper Sandusky students typically earn about 35 college credit hours by the time they graduate to get a jump start on their college degrees.

We commend and thank area public high schools who participate and help fund these courses. We also greatly appreciate those that host college classes at their school.

If this is all news to you as a parent, ask your kids if they would be interested.  If this is news to you as a high school junior or senior, ask your guidance counselor for details on how you can sign up — or you can call Marion Technical College to learn more (740-389-4636). We also have various “Welcome Sessions” that students and parents can attend (click here for details).

Scott Potter

“There are many benefits to taking PSEO classes from Marion Technical College. First and foremost is the financial advantage. Secondly, students are getting an accredited college class that will transfer to any public two-year or four-year college in Ohio. It is a great introduction to the college experience, workload, and expectations.

Another great benefit is the fact that class sizes are relatively small therefore students get a personal educational experience. The entry-level courses offered at four-year institutions often have 75-150 students in a large lecture hall. The experience can make students feel more like a number than a person. Our smaller class size creates an excellent teaching and learning environment so the classes can be more interesting and engaging.”

— Scott Potter, MTC Instructor teaching at Upper Sandusky High School
