The Marion Technical College Nursing Department has been selected by the Ohio Board of Nursing to receive a pre-license RN Nurse Education Grant Program award of $200,000 to transition Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN’s) to the Registered Nurse (RN) program.
The grant allowed MTC to hire two, new full-time faculty. The goal is to increaseenrollment in the transitional program of LPN’s into the RN program and produce more graduates at a faster pace. Adding two faculty members to the full-time staff will double the capacity of LPN transition students to 32 per year.
MTC does not have an LPN program, but is a choice for students from other institutions to transfer their LPN to an RN. “We get LPN’s from all over the state for this program. Tri-Rivers produces several for us along with Columbus State, North Central State, and Rhodes State,” Carol Hoffman, Dean of Nursing said. “With the addition of two more faculty, we can really put out more quality graduates in less time and fill the job needs in the community,” she added.
MTC’s RN program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) which allows graduates to transfer to any college if their goal is to continue their education in nursing. “The program is great! Because of our accreditation, we have wonderful partnerships for nurses to continue their education on this campus. Eligible students can go on to receive a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) at the Ohio State University Marion Campus and then continue with their Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) through video conference with Otterbein College,” Hoffman explains.
Marion Technical College was able to apply for the grant because of their partnership with Marion General Hospital (MGH). Vicki Lewis, Interim Vice President of Patient Care at MGH comments on the importance of the grant, “We congratulate Marion Technical College on securing this important grant. At the hospital level, we know that the experience LPN’s accumulate often serves as a foundation for completion of their RN degree and enhances their understanding of patient care needs.” Obtaining this grant is just another example of our partnership with MTC to educate, train, and retain talent
in our community,” says Lewis.
