Physical Therapist Assistant
Laura Perkins – A.K.A. Doer

Laura PerkinsThere are those who “do” and those who sit back and watch others “do.” If you were to sit back and watch Laura Perkins “do” – it would wear you out! Perkins is the kind of person that definitely is a doer, and because of this drive, she has chosen to get extremely involved in her new professional career of Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA).

Laura is a mother, a wife, a current MTC student, an MTC tutor, and a scholarship winner for the State Policy Payment Forum through the American Physical Therapy Association or APTA. The Ohio Physical Therapy Association or OPTA awarded the local scholarship to Laura. As a winner of the contest, Perkins won a trip to Philadelphia, PA, where she got to hob-knob with influential people in her field. “It was a great opportunity to meet and network with people in my field from Ohio and throughout the United States,” Perkins said. “The things this organization does affects the PTA profession all across the country and I got to be a part of it,” she continued.

Laura is staying active in the OPTA since her trip to Pennsylvania. SheLaura Perkins Tutoring and several classmates have joined the OPTA and represented MTC at the OPTA Conference. “As a result of my involvement, people recognize my name and ask my opinion on what I’m learning. It’s neat to be a voice for the future of the PTA profession,” Perkins states.

Laura is a great example of what “getting involved” can do for a student. The more you network in your field, the better you look to employers. Perkins is doing it – you can, too! To learn more about PTA and all that it has to offer, go to www.mtc.edu/Health.

Radiography Technology

Competitive Students Create “Top Dawg”
Contest in Radiography Technology

Sarah WickhamIn Deb Myers’ radiography class, students don’t just compete against themselves for the highest score – they compete against each other. They created a contest to compete for the “Top Dawg” position in the class. The “Top Dawg” is awarded to the individual with the highest grade point average in Myers class. For Winter term 2008, the Top Dawg class winner was Sarah Wickham.

What does Sarah win? Bragging rights and a spot on the radiography billboard located in the Technical Education Center hallway outside of the radiography lab.

Pictured on the bulletinboard are co-creators, Kelly Dishon and Lisa Fratangelo. It’s a fun way to showcase their program and their classmates!Kelly Dishon and Lisa Fratangelo

Pharmacy Technician

Certificate Program
Now Available at MTC

After consulting with area pharmacists, the Allied Health department at MTC has developed a Pharmacy Technician Certificate program. The program will emphasize excellent customer service along with the necessary college general and technical courses to prepare the student to assist a Licensed Pharmacist.

The Pharmacy Certificate program, which exposes the students to both retail and hospital-based pharmacy practices, takes only three quarters to complete. Upon completion, students will be prepared to sit for the exam offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certificate Board to achieve their CPhT credential.

Area Licensed Pharmacist, Andrew Fiasco states, “Pharmacy is a wonderful profession and the growing health care needs of our population are creating a larger need for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Responsibilities for pharmacy technicians are changing, and programs like the one at MTC will help a new generation of pharmacy technicians be ready to accept the challenges of this diverse field.”

The program’s courses are also available as Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits for pharmacy technicians already working in the field.
