This is the theme of Engineering Technologies throughout Ohio, and MTC is doing its part to fill the need – We just need students!
1,247. When Googling “Engineering, Jobs, Ohio,” that is the number of jobs that careerbuilders.com lists as needed in Ohio. The number of skilled workers in Ohio to fill those 1,247 positions? Not nearly enough. Marion Technical College has recently given its Engineering Technologies program a complete overhaul to create a program that pumps out students who are well-trained, educated, and ready to fill those 1,247 open positions in the field of engineering throughout Ohio.
The list of “The 10 Hardest Jobs to Fill,” a Manpower publication, includes seven positions related to engineering. Jay McCreary, Dean of Engineering at MTC, consulted area employers to ensure that the curriculum closely matches the need for engineers in this area.
“Honda recently came to me with the request for engineering technology grads because of the need for a skilled workforce. I wish I had more students to give them. In 2008, the Engineering Technologies division produced 15 graduates. All of them had jobs before they walked across the stage to receive their degree,” Dean McCreary emphasized, when discussing the need for engineering technology students. McCreary adds, “This area has a need for this type of degree and if a student commits, he or she is as close as possible to a guaranteed successful career.”
Because of an aging workforce and a new generation of workers entering other professions, engineers, machinists, and skilled trade workers are the three most difficult positions to recruit for, according to Manpower’s annual list of “The 10 Hardest Jobs to Fill.” The survey also reports that the loss of retiring boomers is compounded by fewer young people entering these fields. Less than ten percent of college students in America are pursuing engineering degrees.
Engineering Technologies Program Highlights:
- Every student is able to participate in a PAID co-op to gain
valuable work experience.
- Technical electives and general education electives allow
students to take more classes early on, giving students
more classes to choose from.
- The addition of technical electives incorporates technical
skills earlier in the curriculum, giving the students a feel for
the engineering program.
- Lots of hands-on experience makes MTC grads more
marketable and better qualified for job placement.
- Blended learning with online and face-to-face options minimizes gas, travel, family conflicts, etc.
- One-Year Certificates – Start here with lower math requirements, get a job, and continue your education.
- Most employers offer tuition reimbursement for job-related
college classes.
Forget the fact that you will be skilled, experienced, marketable, and employable; you can make an outstanding salary! In this area, Marion Technical College graduates start out earning $30,000 to $50,000 per year, after only two years of education.
The point is Engineering Technology is a great career with an outstanding need.
