Phlebotomy Certificate
Limited Enrollment Program

One important member of any health care team is the Phlebotomist. Phlebotomists are specially trained individuals who use a variety of equipment and techniques to collect blood samples from patients, usually in conjunction with diagnostic testing.

Additionally, phlebotomists have a great deal of critical contact with patients of all types. A skilled phlebotomist can make drawing blood a less traumatic experience by locating veins and introducing a needle or other equipment with little or no discomfort.

MTC offers a two-quarter certificate program in Phlebotomy. This offers interested individuals the opportunity to prepare for and enter a career field in just a matter of months.

Medical Sciences Mission Statement:

To provide allied health students with a personal and professional learning centered education.

Learning Outcomes:

Graduates of this training will be ready to:

  • demonstrate proper techniques to obtain capillary and venous blood specimens
  • apply appropriate specimen handling and transportation techniques
  • demonstrate knowledge of infection control and safety practices, and follow established guidelines and regulations
  • understand the importance of specimen collection in the overall patient care system
  • identify inadequate specimens
  • use the computer technology applications to interact with laboratory information systems
  • demonstrate professional interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills
  • collect the appropriate specimen for the ordered analytical test(s)
  • perform in a safe manner that minimizes risk to patients, self, and others
  • demonstrate professional conduct and apply legal, social, and ethical responsibilities within the health care environment.

Additionally, graduates of this program complete a clinical experience that links what they learn in the classroom and laboratory setting with real-world situations and challenges. This practicum consists of 120 hours of hands-on clinical duties at one of the College's many health care clinical affiliates.

Career Opportunities:

Careers in phlebotomy are predicted to grow by roughly 14 percent through the year 2016; many students begin their careers with phlebotomy training to gain experience, earn income, and learn more about the opportunities in the Health Technologies fields.
