Cross training - preparing workers for multitasking - has become much more commonplace in the health care field.  Completers of MTC's Medical Office certificate program will have strong clerical and medical skills, and will be ideal candidates for many cross-trained support positions.

This program consists of three quarters of  full-time study in medical terminology, office procedures, communications, and more.  For potential students considering other responsibilities such as work and family, program curriculum can be spread over a longer period of time, providing greater flexibility.

To provide allied health students with a personal and professional learning centered education.

Graduates of this training will be ready to:

• perform administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, maintaining records, medical transcription, and application of computer management tools and equipment;
• manage practice finances including bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking and proper plans for third-party reimbursement, using CPT & ICD-9 coding;
• demonstrate a proficient knowledge of medical terminology and procedures as it relates to surgical procedures, diagnostic testing, human anatomy and physiology, the etiology and pathology of diseases, and common treatment options;
• demonstrate professional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and,
• demonstrate professional conduct and apply legal, social, and ethical responsibilities within the health care environment .

Should an individual later decide to enroll in an Associate Degree program at MTC, courses from the Medical Office certificate curriculum will apply to the extent that they are required in a specific program, or that they meet appropriate elective course requirements.

Labor data predicts a more than 9 percent increase in the number of jobs available in this field nationally through 2016; Ohio projects a 14 percent growth trend through the year 2010 for the same type of positions.

Certification Information.

To apply for acceptance into the Medical Sciences certificate program of Medical Office, your application file should contain:

1. Application for Admission to MTC [and nonrefundable application fee].
2. Final high school transcript [or GED results] and college transcripts [if applicable].
3. Successful completion of the Basic Skills Assessment [COMPASS] in reading, writing, and mathematics pre-algebra.
4. A minimum accumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 in high school or college-level coursework. (whichever is most recent)

If required, Foundation Courses are available to help you meet any specialized program admission requirements.

Potential employers may require drug screens and criminal background investigations.  Individuals who have been convicted of a crime, including felony, gross misdemeanor, misdemeanor, or drug related arrest may be ineligible for employment.
