In this challenging associate degree program, students traditionally complete six quarters of consecutive study. Course work includes studies in records and data management, medical office procedures, communications, medical terminology, accounting, medical transcription, insurance coding, and a broad range of Microsoft® Office® software applications (an industry standard).
Additionally, students in this program complete a field "practicum'' experience in a physician's office or medical office setting to help demonstrate the link between MTC's hands-on curriculum and actual workplace demands.
Graduates of this program will be able to:
- Code, classify, and index diagnoses and procedures for reimbursement by Medicare, Medicaid, and medical insurances using ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding;
- Recognize and problem solve situations related to the medical office environment;
- Demonstrate professional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
- Demonstrate professional conduct and apply legal, social, and ethical responsibilities within the health care environment;
- Perform in a safe manner that minimizes risk to patients, self, and others;
- Perform administrative duties such as maintaining medical records, scheduling appointments, medical transcription and document production and apply computer management tools to perform them;
- Demonstrate proficient knowledge of computer software as it applies to document production, spreadsheets, and databases;
- Operate medical office equipment and technology;
- Manage finances including bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking;
- Perform mathematical calculations related to the medical office environment; and
- Review and interpret medical records for disease processes, surgical procedures, and other medical treatments;
- Apply business concepts to medical office management.
