Medical Laboratory Technology
Limited Enrollment Program
|
|
More than 10 billion diagnostic laboratory tests are performed in the United States each year, carried out by competent, highly trained Medical Laboratory Technology program graduates.
At MTC, the Medical Laboratory program consists of seven quarters of academic and hands-on laboratory studies to prepare graduates for work in a variety of laboratory and clinical settings.
Medical Laboratory Technicians are a critical part of any health care team, serving as the "detective'' to turn clues into useful diagnostic statements.
Medical Laboratory Technicians may work in several areas of the clinical laboratory, or just specialize in one field.
Graduates of this program receive the Associate of Applied Science degree, and will also be eligible to take the appropriate national certification examinations offered by agencies such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel.
|
Medical Sciences Mission Statement: |
To provide allied health students with a personal and professional learning centered education.

Learning Outcomes:
|
The College's Medical Laboratory Program teaches students how to collect and process specimens, perform basic analytical tests, and more.

Graduates of this program will be able to:
- collect and process biological specimens for analysis;
- perform analytical test and mathematical calculations relating to all areas of the clinical laboratory;
- monitor quality control recognize factors which interfere with analytical tests and take appropriate actions;
- perform basic maintenance of equipment and instruments;
- recognize and solve medical laboratory problems;
- apply basic scientific principles in learning new techniques and procedures;
- utilize computer technology applications to interact with computerized instruments and laboratory information systems;
- demonstrate knowledge of infection control and safety practices and follow established guidelines and regulations;
- relate laboratory findings with basic disease processes;
- demonstrate professional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
- demonstrate proficient knowledge of computer software as it applies to document production, spreadsheets, and databases;
- demonstrate professional conduct and apply legal, social, and ethical responsibilities within the health care environment; and
- pursue continued professional development.

Clinical Affiliates: |
Medical Laboratory Technology students participate in a supervised clinical field experience to transfer classroom and laboratory learning to the work setting providing students with experience.
Medical Laboratory Technology curriculum and hands-on clinical experiences are possible through the concerted efforts of a network of health care and medical organizations, including Bucyrus Community Hospital, Galion Community Hospital, Hardin Memorial Hospital, Knox Community Hospital, Marion Ancillary Services, Marion General Hospital, MedCentral Health Systems:...Mansfield, MedCentral Health Systems:..Shelby, Memorial Hospital of Union County, Mercy Hospital/Tiffin, and Wyandot Memorial Hospital, Samaritan Regional Health Center, Blanchard Valley Health Systems.

Career Opportunities: |
More than 297,000 individuals are involved in providing more than 10 billion diagnostic tests each year in the U.S.; national industry growth is expected 14 percent through 2016; Ohio expects 3 percent job growth through the year 2010.
|
Program Admission: |
To apply for acceptance into the Medical Laboratory Technology Program, your application file should contain the following:
- MTC Application for Admission and nonrefundable application fee.
- American College Test [ACT] scores with a minimum composite score of 18, or successful completion of college-level required program courses: two courses with grades of ‘‘A,'' three courses with grades of "B,'' or better or four courses with grades of "C'' or better.
- Successful completion of the Basic Skills Assessment [COMPASS] in reading, writing, and mathematics [algebra].
- Final high school transcript [or GED results] and college transcripts [if applicable]. Your high school/college courses should include successful completion of biology, chemistry, and algebra.
- Minimum of four [4] hours of observation in an approved Medical Laboratory documented with completion and submission of an observation validation form.
- Minimum accumulative grade point average [GPA] of 2.5 in high school or college-level coursework [whichever is most recent], is required for program admission. Minimum accumulative grade point average [GPA] of 2.0 is required for program continuation and completion.
- Completed Medical Laboratory Technology application.
- Students accepted to the program will be required to submit to a criminal background check facilitated by Marion Technical College and conducted by The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification. Students with certain felony, misdemeanor, or drug-related arrests as specified in Senate Bill 38 and House Bill 160, will be ineligible for admission into the program.
- Accepted students will also be required to submit to a drug screening prior to their clinical/practicum experience. Positive drug screenings will result in forfeiture of the clinical/practicum. All Medical Sciences students may be subject to random drug screens for cause during the program. Any student who refuses/fails to cooperate, or complete any required drug screening will be considered "positive" and dismissed from the program.
A complete listing of all requirements and policies/procedures for the program is available in the Medical Sciences Student Handbook.
Additional requirements for entrance into the MLT Clinical course [MLT2810A] include:
- completion of medical physical
- testing for infectious diseases and updated immunizations
- purchase of liability insurance
- drug screening
Clinical/Practicum sites may require:
- random drug testing
- HIV testing, if exposed to blood-borne pathogen
- submission to treatment/counseling, if exposed to infectious diseases
- criminal background check
If required, College Foundation Courses are available to help you meet any specialized program admission requirements.

Life Experience Credit: |
At MTC, the ultimate importance is placed on what you know, not the where and how.
Life Experience Credit (formerly called Credit for Prior Learning) allows the College to grant credit for demonstrated competencies normally learned through traditional classroom attendance, or for courses that do not meet traditional guidelines for the "credit by examination" process.
Life Experience Credit sources may include work and supervisory experience, knowledge gained from personal studies, travel, hobbies, and other achievements and experiences.
See your program Dean/Director to learn more about how Life Experience Credit may be able to "jumpstart'' your degree plans.
|
Articulation and Advanced Training: |
| Because some jobs/employers embrace the idea of "lifelong learning" and career advancement, MTC's associate degree program in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) has developed solid "2 + 2" options with leading Ohio colleges and universities so that graduates can smoothly transition into and complete a bachelor's degree program.
One such relationship is in the form of a predominantly online degree program with the University of Cincinnati; details can be found at www.clsonline.uc.edu.
Another option for advanced education is with Bowling Green State University and a bachelor's degree in Allied Health; learn more at http://www.bgsu.edu/colleges/hhs/programs/allied.html.
