Today's education is all about convenience. Students are in the "driver's seat," setting the pace for how, where, and when they want classes and programs delivered.

In response to this growing trend, MTC has partnered with Franklin University (Columbus) to provide an online bachelor's degree completion program that can be entirely completed without leaving the Marion community.

Students participating in the program take core courses at MTC, earning an associate's degree or equivalent (the program is also open to people who have already earned an associate degree). Participants then take a selected number of broad-based "Bridge" courses (becoming the "Junior" year of a four-year degree) at MTC to prepare them for upper level online coursework (becoming the "Senior" year of a four-year degree) taken from Franklin --courses students can complete at their own pace when it best suits their schedule!

When all classes are complete, the student is awarded a bachelor's degree from Franklin University during MTC commencement. By conveniently eliminating relocation and/or commuting, and giving students more control of the education process through online course delivery, students in this program can better balance school, work, and family responsibilities.

UNIQUE PROGRAM POINTS: Program participants have access to online courses especially developed to deliver critical skills in a convenient format. Roughly 90 percent of the online courses are "asynchronous" in nature, meaning the student logs on whenever and wherever is most convenient – weekends, at work during a lunch break, or at night after the kids have gone to sleep.

Coursework utilizes e-mail and Internet applications to deliver materials. Assignments include Internet research, online testing, activities utilizing chatrooms and newsgroups, and accessing virtual libraries for project support. Students can use their own home or office computer equipment (Franklin can provide the minimum specs needed for effective participation) or complete their work at the computer labs at MTC.

Online learning erases geographic boundaries. Course instructors - leaders in their field -  may be teaching from across the state or across the country. Likewise, classroom peers are located throughout the regions serviced by Franklin's program.Students enrolled in the Community College Alliance receive dual support from MTC and Franklin University through library and computer resources, advising and transcript evaluation, financial aid opportunities, technical support, and more. And just recently, Alliance students were given the opportunity to earn minor concentrations in addition to their bachelor's degree.

Academic minors provide students the opportunity to study and comprehend an area outside of their major, receive recognition for an achievement of concentrated study outside of their major, and prepare them to lead a well-rounded personal and professional life.

Online learning isn't for everyone. Although convenient, online learning is self-paced and requires an amount of dedication and discipline not always required in a traditional classroom setting.  Learning Strategies, a two-hour, six-week course, provides a detailed overview of the responsibilities of and resources available to a "virtual student."
