Electrical Engineering

It is nearly impossible to go through a typical day without interacting with modern applications of Electrical Engineering. Whether it's home computers, communications equipment, or your favorite mode of transportation, electrical components and control systems help us manage how we work, play, and live.

MTC’s Electrical Engineering associate degree is designed to meet electrical control technician needs in the industrial manufacturing industry. Electrical engineering technicians enjoy a dynamic career coupling science and technology with practical thinking and problem solving.

Graduates of the electrical engineering program at MTC will also have strong team skills to work effectively with others, critical writing abilities, and project estimating and costing skills. All Engineering Technologies programs at MTC foster strong communications skills and emphasis on college-level algebra and trigonometry to create graduates with superior problem solving abilities and ‘‘ team player’’ attitudes.

A graduate of MTC’s Electrical Engineering program will be awarded the Associate of Applied Science degree.

Program Skills:

Graduates will be able to:

  • comply with standards in the planning, design, and analysis of electrical systems;
  • analyze and solve (troubleshoot) technical problems using creative thinking and problem solving techniques;
  • develop and interpret technical specifications used in creating designs and acceptance tests;
  • perform acceptance testing of electrical components, equipment, and systems;
  • communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and co-workers;
  • operate various production, maintenance, and testing equipment;
  • identify basic fluid power components and develop a fluid power circuit that will accomplish a specific task;
  • work effectively as a member of a technical team;
  • prepare electronic schematics using manual and CAD drafting systems;
  • analyze and interpret circuit diagrams;
  • program and operate computer systems;
  • establish, operate, and maintain a system for documenting design revisions for electrical components, equipment, and    systems;
  • select DC and AC motors used for various applications in industry;
  • construct, analyze, and troubleshoot power and control circuits;
  • select transformers for power distribution applications; and
  • write control programs for Programmable Logic Controllers.
Career Opportunities:

Nearly 290,000 electrical engineering-related jobs exist in the U.S. in the areas of design, programming, distribution, information processing, and maintenance/repair. Nationally, the number of jobs in this area is predicted to grow between 10 percent and 20 percent through the year 2010. Ohio expects to maintain a nearly even job market, but open positions will result from retirements and promotions.

Growing needs in areas such as business and government will also generate a continued high demand for electrical engineering specialists.

Program Admission:

To apply for acceptance into the Electrical Engineering program at MTC, applicants must have:

  1. Completed and submitted the MTC Application for Admission and nonrefundable application fee.
  2. Provided official final high school transcript (or GED results) and college transcripts (if applicable) with posted graduation date or passing GED results.
  3. Successful completion of the Basic Skills Assessment test (COMPASS) is highly recommended.

Transfer students to MTC must qualify in accordance with current admission criteria.

If required, Foundation Courses are available to help you meet any specialized program admission requirements.
