Engineering Technologies
Engineering Department Overview

Marion Technical College’s Engineering Technologies programs are driven by the needs expressed by advisory committee members representing area industries, and are tailored to meet these needs.  The results are hands-on, career-oriented programs which not only prepare graduates to apply engineering knowledge efficiently, but give them the specific skills that are foremost in current job-market demand.  In addition, all programs have a cooperative work experience component to allow students to gain additional skills and experience.
MTC’s Associate of Applied Science and Associate of Technical Studies degrees in Engineering Technologies are designed for students who wish to earn an Associate’s degree and then go into the workforce.  Many of the courses in our programs are TAG, CTAG or OTM eligible if you later wish to transfer credits to a university to continue your education.  Please see your advisor, the Ohio Board of Regents’ website or the College website for more information on TAG, CTAG and OTM eligible courses.

Students who would like to go on to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology or Engineering should replace Applied Technical Math I and Applied Technical Math II in their Associate’s degree program with a minimum of 10 credit hours of College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus I or Calculus II to maximize credit transferability toward the Bachelor’s degree.   Likewise, Applied Physics I and Applied Physics II should be replaced in your Associate’s degree program with a minimum of 10 hours of Physics Mechanics and Physics: Mechanics Lab, Physics: Matter & Waves and Physics: Matter & Waves Lab, Physics: Electricity and Magnetism and Physics: Electricity and Magnetism Lab, or a calculus based physics sequence offered at many four year universities.   Even though only 10 hours of math and 10 hours of physics are required in our Associate’s degree programs, you should complete the entire math and physics sequences for maximum transferability.  The actual courses you will need will depend upon the university and the program into which you will be transferring.

In addition to your Associate’s degree, you may also want to complete Marion Technical College’s Transfer Module, which is comprised of general education courses that apply toward the Bachelor’s degree.   Some of the courses would have already been completed by completing your Associate’s degree.

You can find more information about the Transfer Module on the College website.  It’s very important that you see your advisor early for help to determine the best courses for you to take based upon your transfer goals and complete the substitution paperwork for your degree.

What is the Difference Between Engineering
and Engineering Technologies

We are often asked how and Engineering Technology degree differs from an Engineering degree.  Very basically, an Engineering Technology degree, even a 4-year one, focuses on applied engineering skills while an Engineering degree focuses on conceptual engineering skills.  See an advisor for more information.

The following descriptions are paraphrased from the brochure “Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Technology, Which Path Will You Take”, published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

An engineer is an innovator – one who is able to interweave knowledge of advanced mathematics, the natural and engineering sciences, and engineering principles and practices with considerations of economic, social, environmental and ethical issues to create new systems and products.

An engineering technologist is a doer or implementer – one who is able to apply a basic knowledge of mathematics, the natural and engineering sciences, current engineering practices and an understanding of economic principles to the solution of design problems and to the operation or testing of engineering and manufacturing systems.
